The BrownGirlFiles

Okay, so I've been keeping mum about this as of late because I didn't really know how to tell anyone, but I've been asked by TheBrownGirlFiles to do some writing for their art section and their weekly installment of Weekend Warrior: The List. I've only written a little bit so far but I've really been enjoying it. My favorite writing assignment so far has been my review of the Mano A Mano show at Runner Runner Gallery (although I wouldn't call it a review, but I can't think of what else to call it right now). I'm going to be working with TheBrownGirlFiles for a few months so there may not be many show updates around here for a while and there aren't a whole lot of details that I can give about this job. I'll be doing a lot of administrative and creative assisting which is another thing that I do along with illustrating and showing.

  1. "I’ve always felt that people from other parts of the country have a somewhat stereotypical view of general Midwestern life, especially in reference to small rural towns. The idea of “the town with no stop light” or places where everyone knows everyone seem like an archetypal part of the distant past; perhaps a more innocent past. I’ve always thought of places like that as being quiet and quaint; places that are a little bit hidden where you stumble upon a world that has an aesthetic frozen in time because time sleeps there. And in its slumber it appears to go untouched by modernity. It’s a bit strange to go from city life to painted signs that have been hanging since they first were hung, and apothecary shops that have been in the family for generations. It all represents a history that hasn’t been paved over or built on top of because these surroundings still have stories to tell. A lifestyle like this doesn’t feel real because it feels too good to be true, too sweet to be soured."

You know what? This paragraph makes the most convincing case yet for why Minneapolis tears down its coolest buildings every twenty years. Find me a sign in Minneapolis City Limits that has been hanging anywhere since 1990.

    1. I couldn't find such a sign, and that makes me sad.
